Unryu-ji Temple

Originally founded in 720 as Myokan-ji Temple, it declined and was later rebuilt around 1395 as Unryu-ji of the Soto Zen sect. It is the family temple of Naganori, the eldest son of Kanamori Nagachika, the lord of Hida, who was killed in action during the Incident at Honno-ji. It is said that around 1590, Nagachika carried out the construction of the temple building.

Unryu-ji Bell Tower Gate (City-designated Cultural Property & Japan Heritage) was built in 1695. It is said that following the destruction of Takayama Castle, the temple received a building called 'Koun-kaku' that was located in the secondary enclosure of the castle, which later became the Bell Tower Gate (as recorded in the history of Unryu-ji).
